This is a nice item to have especially with COMCAST ripping off customers these days for renting a modem. In case you have not noticed your comcast internet bill of late, they are charging a whopping $5 PER MONTH for renting a modem. This motorola surfboard at $38 was a no-brainer for me and it works just as expected.Good product.
The SB5120 SurfBoard Cable modem is a compact product that proved easy to install and use.The only problem I experienced was with my Cable Provider (Charter Communication) that required me to register its MAC address, then failed to set p the modem properly from their end.I took me several Support Calls before I could find a Charter Support person that was somewhat knowledgeable and was able to complete the registration. During these several days, my VoIP phone was unusable thanks to Charter.
The most "difficult" part is calling your cable provider and reading off the MAC address on the label, and that was only a hassle because Comcast spent 10 minutes trying to convince me that I needed to install their software on my computer, instead of just taking the 10 seconds it took them to make the change.Ease of Use: Once it's hooked up, you don't have to touch it. Our cable internet kept cutting out sporadically, and we felt the Comcast provided modem was to blame. I replaced it with this modem, and the problem immediately went away.Reliability: This modem is now on its 4th year of use, and still works just as well as it did the first day I got it.Installation: Incredibly easy, you take it out of the box and plug it in. Perfect.Features: fast, stable cable internet, and it saves you $3-5 a month vs renting. The modem has paid for itself.
I was a little concerned about buying a used product, but the modem seems to work just fine. It seems to be able to pick up weaker signals than the old RCA Comcast modem I was using before.
There was a little problem with comcast giving me internet connection when I replaced the modem. I bought this used for about $30 instead of paying $3/mo to comcast. Worked great after some struggle. But I first connected the PC to the modem (instead of through a wireless router that I had placed in between before). Rebooted things Modem followed by PC) and everything worked fine.
